The wolves all moved as a unit, running the herd of buffalo in circles, a few of the large bulls ran out to ward off the wolves. Axel gave a barking order to some of the wolves behind him. He had told them to weave out along side the buffalo. He snarled at one of the brutes, narrowly dodging it's pounding hooves. He spotted the large cow that veered the wrong way and he immediately gave the order to surround her.
First they'd have to isolate the large cow. She didn't help herself any to run into the woods, barreling into stumps and branches. Trees shook and leaves drifted down. Axel veered to her right, snapping his jaws by her feet, trying to make her veer to the left, towards the tiny meadow in that general direction. With a bark he sent half the other wolves to run off and wait there, and the other half to help coral her into the meadow where she'd be vulnerable surrounded by all the wolves.
The cow would feed everyone, even in such a large community they had. The pups would be well fed and even the omegas wouldn't have to worry about starving this hunt out. And with some of the other wolves still hunting some of the deer around the forest they were all bound to be fed and fat by dawn.
The lights were twinkling up overhead, stars just beginning to show in the pastel twilight. The sun was just a sliver above the teal horizon. Axel's eyes twinkled softly in those last few seconds before he'd remembered the chase, the hunt. Night was the best time to hunt for wolves. They were usually nocturnal animals anyways. He knew after they'd finished the remains of the cow they'd have a nice long howl.
